How does PingerThinger work?

PingerThinger uses ICMP packets (ping) to monitor IP addresses.  An address is considered unreachable once the ping has failed twice.

What are differences between PingerThinger, PingerThinger Pro, and PingerThinger Enterprise?

The difference is in how many IPs you can monitor and how many instances of PingerThinger you can run.  PingerThinger (free) monitors 10 IPs and allows one instance. PingerThinger Pro monitors allows unlimited IPs and 2 instances. PingerThinger Enterprise allows unlimited IPs and is a site license.  See the chart here.

How much does PingerThinger cost?

PingerThinger is free.  PingerThinger Pro is $40.  PingerThinger Enterprise is $450.  Order here

How many IPs can PingerThinger monitor?

PingerThinger is limited to 10 IP addresses.  PingerThinger Pro has no imposed limits.  PingerThinger Enterprise also has no imposed limits.  The number of IPs it can monitor is limited by the speed of the machine running it and the bandwidth.  One of our customers uses PingerThinger to monitor over 1000 IPs using an old NT machine.

How can I use PingerThinger in a team setting?

Often a team of people has the responsibility of ensuring network stability.  PingerThinger has been used in these settings by 1) either projecting the "Live Red List" onto a screen at the front of the room or 2) by configuring other software to take the log written to the serial port and recreate it on a sign board and on team members desktops.

Can I run more than one instance of PingerThinger?

Yes, if you have the licenses.

I'm color blind, how can I use PingerThinger?

If you leave the "Live Red List" open,  you will be able to see what IPs are down.  Also, if you mouse over the PingerThinger icon in the system tray, the tool tip will tell you PingerThinger's current status.

PingerThinger runs, but I get an "unable to send ping, 0 bytes sent" error, why?

To run PingerThinger, you need to be logged in as an administrator.

PingerThinger showed an IP go down and recover, but the server's logs do not show an outage.  What happened?

If a slow link or serial line becomes saturated, the routers will start dropping ping packets.  This means PingerThinger will get no response to its ping and will mark the IP as being down.  In this way, PingerThinger can help you know if any lines are stressed.

How can I tell if PingerThinger is still running?

If the PingerThinger icon is still in the system tray, then PingerThinger is still running.  If you have an IP down, the "Live Red List" will the most recent time it was pinged.

Another way to tell is to open the Windows Task Manager and look at the performance graphs.  When it pings, the processor speed should go up.

I've renamed the input file and the Start menu short cut doesn't work, what should I do?

When you use a different input file, you need to modify the short cut in the Start menu.  See the documentation under Getting Started - Way 1.
